On Sunday, June 7th, a new summer sermon series begins on the subject of worship. Why am I preaching on this subject you might ask?
For starters - worship is what we were created to do, and what Jesus redeemed us to be. He seeks worshipers (John 4:23-24). We need to know what that looks like because what is commonly presented as "worship" today is not what God is looking for. What we think is the worship of God is actually the worship of self, and/or the worship of a caricature of God.
Here's another reason: even if we have the right object of worship, we can forget what is happening when we worship God. We can easily forget where we are and what sort of response God is expecting from us. Worship is not about simply showing up for the worship service, but is about encountering God. It is about entering his presence, even leaving the realm of time and by faith - stepping into the heavenly realms, into the courts of the Lord. But we often lose sight of this reality resulting in a ho-hum attitude towards worship and congregational singing. If we are bored or uninterested in what is going on, and find it easy to "blow-off" worship, then there is a problem.
This is why we will spend the next few weeks looking at the subject of worship. My intention is for us to be more aware of what we are doing when we gather to worship and experience the presence of the Lord anew.
